Pipeline infrastructure is one of the biggest structural cost drivers in gas bills. Countries with dense, mature gas networks can distribute at lower marginal cost, while regions with limited pipeline coverage face higher distribution charges or dependence on alternate fuels like LPG.

Import dependence vs domestic production is critical. Producers like the USA and Canada can maintain relatively competitive household pricing due to local supply depth. Import-heavy markets generally carry higher landed cost, currency risk, regasification cost, and storage overhead.

Subsidies explain why some countries appear extremely cheap. In heavily subsidized markets, customer bills are often disconnected from true market cost. This can reduce household burden short term, but utility finances and long-term system sustainability become key policy issues.

The 2022 European energy crisis highlighted exposure risk: Russia-Ukraine conflict disrupted flows, triggered supply uncertainty, and pushed benchmark prices sharply higher. Even after peak volatility, Europe still reflects elevated infrastructure and policy-driven retail gas costs.

LNG markets matter globally because LNG cargoes reprice supply alternatives across continents. Countries without affordable pipeline imports often compete in LNG markets, where demand swings in Asia or weather shocks in Europe can influence delivered gas prices worldwide.

Germany is often cited as expensive because final household tariffs include more than commodity cost: network fees, taxes, climate-policy costs, storage/security requirements, and regulated charges all stack into the customer bill.

Practical comparison rule: check per-m3 benchmark, then add local tax/levy structure, fixed charges, subsidy stability, and seasonal demand profile. This gives a more realistic view than headline commodity price alone.
